Take Care of your Skiwear and Boardwear

1. Washing all Skiwear and boardwear jackets and pants

a. Pretreat spots on cuffs and hems with a stain stick of your choice

b. Follow manufacturer's directions on inside label. This label is on all garments. Keep in mind you should only use powdered detergent from the supermarket. Liquid detergents found in the markets are petroleum-based products that may leave grease spots on fabric. There are commercial products available specifically designed to clean skiwear. These include: Tectron Prowash - a non-detergent soap great for down, fleece or any waterproof fabrics. Also, Nikwax Techwash is a non-detergent soap great for fleece or any waterproof fabrics.

c. Wash jackets and pants only as needed. These garments don't need to be cleaned as often as your regular day to day clothes. Once at the end of the season should be enough.

2. Waterproofing

a. Some garments may need a reapplication of waterproofing. This on average should be done about every 10 washings or as needed. This reapplication of waterproofing will restore water repellency, maximize breathability and minimize condensation build up without affecting the color or feel of the fabric. There are two ways to do this:

1. Nikwax wash in waterproofer called TX direct wash in. This can be used on all laminated, coated and microfiber fabrics including Gore-Tex, Ultrex and Entrant. This is an extremely easy way to do waterproofing; you just let your washing machine handle it.

2. Tectron DWR water repellant spray: This is a spray on water repellant. Unlike Scotchguard, found in markets, this spray is specially formulated for skiwear fabrics. Tectron's spray is effective on all fabrics including Gore-Tex and other high performance fabrics. It will restore water repellency and contains UV sunscreen to reduce fading and degradation caused by the sun.

b. You can also waterproof fleece products such as fleece jackets, tops, hats and mitts. All your fleece items can have a water repellant finish with the use of Nikwax polarproof. This is a wash in product that treats every fiber of fleece or wool which improves wet weather insulating qualities by reducing water absorption, while at the same time, maintaining breathability. Polarproof treated garments will also dry faster.

3.Storing your Winter Garments

a. Hang your jackets and pants on sturdy wooden hangers to help maintain shape.

b. If you haven't washed your garments yet this season, do so now before storing. Then they will be ready to use when taken out of the bag next winter. And, any stains will be cleaned up and not given time to set over the summer.

c. Cover with a clear plastic trash bag to keep dust off. The clear bag will help you find your jacket or pants come next winter season.

d. Store in a dry place till needed.
